On Monday December 2, 2019, at 7 pm, Prof. dr. Daniel Gould presents his final lecture as holder of the Francqui Chair that was awarded to him by the Francqui Foundation on the recommendation of the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Prof. Gould is a globally recognized expert in sports psychology, specializing in, among other things, the relationship between stress and sporting performance, coaching of Olympic athletes, youth sport and the use of sport as a means of integration. Prof. Gould received various awards for his work, including an honorary doctorate at the Free University of Brussels.
This last lecture (in English) focuses on the psychology of winning:
This presentation will begin by focusing on how great athletes and coaches define winning while emphasizing the importance of coaches and athlete creating their own meaning of winning. In the second part of the presentation the strategies for creating the right motivational climate to facilitate the likelihood winning will be discussed, emphasizing the importance of finding the right balance of task and ego involved climates. The importance of athletes' setting outcome, performance and process goals in integrated fashion is also stressed. Finally, in the third and final part of the presentation of a pyramid model or achieving peak performance is presented as a guide to identifying the mental skills and attributes of athletes need to achieve peak performance.
