MENTAL HEALTH OF STUDENT-ATHLETES

Elite sport and higher education in the Brussels-Capital Region

For the 2022 call of Dynamic Brussels "A Young and Lively Region", the dpt. Topsport en Studie submitted as a coordinator a new project phase entitled "Elite sport and higher education in the Brussels-Capital Region: Mental Health of Student-Athletes". We are very excited to announce that our project will be funded by Dynamic Brussels (€60K equally divided between VUB and ULB). The project will be led by the dpt. Topsport & Studie of VUB (prof. dr. Koen De Brandt, prof. dr. Paul Wylleman, dr. Simon Defruyt) in collaboration with ULB Sports.

The goals of the project are to:
(1) identify and support the mental health and well-being of (elite) athletes studying in Brussels so that they can combine sport and education in a successful and healthy way;
(2) to develop and implement a monitoring and support system within a network of educational institutions and sport organisations in the Brussels-Capital Region with regard to the guidance of their student-athletes.

The deliverables include, amongst others (i) an online survey to identify the impact of athletes' dual career experiences on mental health, and (ii) an online quiz to increase mental health literacy in student-athletes.

More information on the project will be available soon. Can't wait? Please contact Koen De Brandt (koen.de.brandt@vub.be). champion
